Thematic maps are designed to show geographic patterns and variations in one or more data sets. Cloropleth thematic maps, such as this one of housing values in the Twin Cities metropolitan area, use color to visualize the data. To keep the viewer's attention focused on the spatial distribution, non-essential data and labels are kept to a minimum. The U.S. census is a rich source of data for mapping purposes.
